Tips For Avoiding Wedding Blunders

Tips For Avoiding Wedding Blunders.

Tips For Avoiding Wedding Blunders.

When planning your wedding, you try to think of every tiny detail until you are absolutely sure that you’ve covered all the bases.  However, there are things that most newlyweds wished they could do over, if they could.  Below are 10 wedding blunder prevention tips that recent brides share so you would not have to share the pain.

  1. Don’t go overboard on the diet. Many brides get so caught in up looking perfect on their big day that they can take their diet a bit too far. This can result in a tired or even sick-looking bride.  Not to mention the biggest danger in excessive dieting after you last fitting – having a wedding dress that does not fit!
  2. Keep the costs in perspective. Your wedding is a very special event.  However, it’s not necessary to break the bank on this one day or max out your credit cards to create your dream wedding.  The most important thing about your wedding is that you get married to the person you love – not that every detail be expensive.
  3. Pay attention to your guests. At big weddings it can be especially difficult to take the time to speak with everyone at the reception. However, it is only polite to make the rounds and try to thank each guest personally for coming.  You should take special care to thank guests who have traveled a long distance for the event.
  4. Have a rain plan. If you are planning an outdoor wedding, it is essential to have a rain plan.  It may be a happier thought to believe that it can’t possibly rain on your wedding day – but plan for the worst and have an alternate location ready and waiting.  Even if you don’t have an outdoor wedding, you should still consider the possibility that it will rain on your grand exit from the church or on outdoor photos.  Plan accordingly.
  5. Use make-up that stays.Even if you think you won’t cry, be prepared as though you will be sobbing.  At the very least you may have to worry about sweat under the bright lights in a warm room, especially if you’ve decorated with candles.  Be prepared for a look that won’t smear, melt, or shine.
  6. Get to know your officiate. Though wedding counseling is optional for some, it is still vitally important to get to know your officiate.  You should be aware of the exact vows that will be read as well as any additional passages. Trusting your officiate to say the perfect thing may backfire if you aren’t familiar with this person.
  7. Try samples. You will want to sample the wedding cake, as well as all courses being served at your reception.  You should also insist on hearing your musicians ahead of time, going over your vows with the officiate, and seeing your bridesmaids in their dresses.  Don’t leave anything up to chance.
  8. Partake of the champagne sparingly. If you are fortunate enough to have an open bar at your wedding, leave this luxury for the enjoyment of the guests.  There are many places and times better suited to have one too many drinks.  Participate in the champagne toast and leave it at that.  This is one day when you want to be able to remember every detail.
  9. Keep track of all your gifts. The last thing you want to do is thank the someone for the wrong gift.  Keep very detailed lists for each gift and guest so that you can thank them properly.
  10. Stay light-hearted.The most important thing on your wedding day is to keep a sense of humor.  As long as your vows are said and you are pronounced man and wife, no other mishap can ruin your day.  So someone tripped, the ring bearer refused to walk down the isle, and one of your bridesmaids’ dresses ripped, be concerned, but make light of the scene, laugh it off, enjoy your memories, and refuse to let anything ruin your day.

Murphy’s Law states “if anything can go wrong, it will.”  No matter how much planning you do, unexpected “little things” can happen that could cause delays and some anxiety before, during or after your wedding day. Don’t get caught unprepared when these emergencies come.  If you want to save money, you can make your own “Wedding Day Emergency Kit” (see instructions below).  However, if you prefer saving time and want to avoid the hassle of collecting what you need for the kit, purchase a pre-made wedding emergency kit.  We looked at several vendors that offer this product and our choice is the Essentials “In the Bag” kit from With You in Mind, Inc.
Essentials Bridal Kit
This “bridal survival” kit is perfect for a small wedding party of 1-4 women. The bag itself is made of quality materials that you can reuse when all the products inside are consummed. The kits contains over seventy brand-named items for fashion, cosmetic or minor medicinal emergencies.

For the Do-it-yourself bride, here is a list of products that you may collect and pack into an organza or silk bag big enough to hold all of the products.  You can also use a good sized make-up train case to carry all your wedding day emergency products.

  • Cosmetics: For make-up touch ups, pack oil-absorbing blotting papers, lip gloss, baby powder cotton swabs and a compact mirror. For your hair, carry a comb, hair brush, bobby pins in your hair color, and hair spray to put those unruly curls in place. A clear nail polish to stop a run in pantyhose
  • Hygiene: Keep these supplies handy: dental floss, hand lotion, minipads, deodorant, tampons, maxi pads, tooth brush, toothpaste and breath mints.
  • Medications:Don’t forget your prescription drugs, Tylenol, Advil or other pain relievers for headaches, band-aids, chewable antacids, allergy pills, diarrhea or constipation medication.
  • Sundries: Miscellaneous items that you might need: hem tape, safety pins, stain remover pads, Kleenex pack, lint roller, sewing kit with thread, needle and scissor, snaps, super glue, static guard and mini snacks.

With your bridal survival kit packed, you are ready for those wedding day emergencies.

Jordan Almond Favors For Your Wedding

Sweet Wedding Favors

Sweet Wedding Favors

Jordan almonds are a long-standing wedding tradition that has been around for more than 3,000 years. In France and the Middle east, they are called dragees. In Greece they are Koufeta. Whatever name you call them, these candy-coated almonds offer the same symbolism. The almond itself is bittersweet in taste. This represents both the good and bad in marriage and life. It is no secret that any long lasting relationship surely has both bitter and sweet moments.

To emphasize the good times, and sweetness in the new marriage, these almonds are coated in sugar or candy coating. You can find these coated almonds in a variety of colors to match your wedding theme. However, the most traditional color is still white. This symbolizes purity. The actual shape of the almond is thought to symbolize love.

If you select Jordan almonds for your wedding favor, there is one more detail you should attend to. These treats are traditionally distributed to the guests in odd numbers. This represents the union of the bride and groom. By giving guests an indivisible number of almonds, your favors are demonstrating the fact that you as a new couple are also indivisible. In the Middle East, the number of almonds is even more precise. This tradition dictates that your guests each receive five, to represent five blessings – health, wealth, happiness, fertility and longevity.

Today you can present this classic wedding favor in a very decorative and modern way. The almonds can be wrapped in tulle, satin, or a small bag tied with colorful ribbons. You can order your Jordan almond favors fully assembled or your can make them yourself.  Watch the video below to see on how easy it is to make them.

For written instructions and/or ordering the supplies or ready-made Jordan almonds favor, go to this website: www.jordanalmondflowers.com.

Topiary Wedding Reception Decoration

No doubt, your wedding reception centerpiece adds ambiance to your special day.  You can spent several hundred dollars for the centerpieces or save money by making them yourself.  One of the floral arrangements that can be easily made by almost anyone is the Topiary.  You can experiment with an infinite number of combination or adapt them to the seasons or theme of your wedding before choosing a final design.  Another plus to making topiary is that they can be made several months in advance and all you need is to ask someone to bring them to the reception venue.   The images above are pre-made topiaries that we have included in this post to give you inspiration in designing your own topiary or, if you’d rather buy than make them, follow these links:

Top row, 1st, 2nd and 4th topiaries: “Honolulu”, “Mini Rose” and “Romance”: Unique Topiaries
Top row, 3rd topiary: “Stargazer”: Etsy,  Second row, 1st topiary: “Rose Topiary Centerpieces”: Stump Prom Second row 2nd and 3rd  topiaries: “Rose Tree” and “Champagne”: Unique Topiaries

Container and Flowers

The first step in creating your topiary is to decide what type of look you are going for.  This will help you choose the right container for your wedding centerpiece.  For traditional topiaries, the most common container is a clay pot that is spray painted or wrapped in fabric  to match your wedding colors.  For a Victorian theme, a tea cup container could be used.  One important requirement for the container is that it is sturdy enough to support the balls or flowers without tipping over.  Once you have chosen your container, decide on the type and color of flowers for your topiary. You can choose one type of flowers and/or one color as in the “Rose Topiary Centerpieces” above.

Ball-Type Topiary

For the ball-type topiaries like most of the pictures above, you will need to buy foam balls or cones,  wooden dowels, glue or a low temperature glue gun, green moss and, of course, your chosen flowers.

  • Insert a wooden dowel into the foam and then place the stick into a pot that is filled with florist clay.
  • Using a low temperature glue gun you can then stick the silk flowers onto the foam until the foam is all covered with flowers or foliage
  • Wrap the dowel in pretty ribbon that match your wedding colors or, for a natural look, leave the dowel in its original color and loosely wrap an Ivy garland around the dowel.
  • Cover the florist clay with green moss and add smaller flowers on top of the moss for additional accent.
  • Tie a ribbon around the top of your container for a finishing touch.

Real Easy Topiary for Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Brides

Here is the direction for one of the topiaries I made for a wedding reception.  For each of the topiaries, I

  • Stuck the stem of a large blue silk hydrangea flower into a painted terracotta pot filled with florist clay.
  • Covered the clay with moss and stuck small Queen Anne’s Lace flowers in the moss.
  • Tied a pretty blue ribbon around the top of the container and I am done.

The trick is the hydrangea is already round.  With a flower head that measures 8″ in diameter and stands 27″ tall, I did not need a dowel, a styrofoam ball or glue. It is that easy!  If I can do this, you can do this to.  All you need is a little inspiration and a touch of creativity.

Once you have chosen your topiary centerpiece, complete the ambiance by bringing  Topiary Photo Holder/Place Card Holder to your wedding reception tables.

Each of these miniature topiaries can hold an engagement photo of the bride and groom or a place card with the name of the guest and the table number to guide him or her to your elegantly decorated reception table.

Have a happy wedding reception!

Wedding Invitation Designs and Wordings That Wow Your Guests

One of the most taken-for-granted details in planning a wedding is the wedding invitation. Although the average cost for US weddings in 2007 is placed at $28,732 by Wedding Industry Trends in their latest Wedding Report, only a small part of that goes to the preparation of the wedding invitation.

Your wedding invitation need not be gold-studded to be that special, and it need not cost you thousands of dollars just so you can impress your guests. Wedding invitations that complement your wedding theme plus a simple invitation wording should do the trick. Here are some ideas on how to come up with great wedding invitation designs with matching invitation wordings:

Beach Theme Wedding

Beach Theme Invitation

For that breezy beach wedding theme, accentuate your wedding invitation with little pebbles, shells, glass pearls,or cutout palm leaves. Using handmade paper will add more drama. And for the wording you can put:

Begin scribbling your toast
Because Sarah and Dave
Will wed at the coast

The Beach Resort
123 Sunset Way
Redondo Beach, California

Or

The perfect shell is a gift from the sea
as beautiful and magnificent
as our love is meant to be

Please join us as we

Outdoor Wedding Theme

Outdoor Theme Invitation

For that outdoorsy theme, you can use affordable vellum paper accentuated with fossilized leaves, acorns or dried twigs and raffia fiber for bows and additional accent. Add a sweet touch by writing:

His love is the sunshine
Keeping me warm
To me, she’s the rainbow
Making me calm
His love gave me wings
Setting me free
And wherever she is
that’s where I will be.

We invite you to be with us
as we begin our new life together
On April 18, 2010
Parkview Terrace
Laguna Niguel, California

Fairy Tale Wedding Theme

FairytaleTheme Invitation

And for that dream-come-true fairytale wedding theme, sprinkle your invitations with fairy dust. With purple-colored fonts set against metallic gold paper, write:

Dreaming of what is yet to be
is more fun when you’re always with me

Please join us as
Nadya and Christian
follow their dreams together in marriage
On April 18, 2010

or

Just like a page out of a fairy tale
the story of romance finally comes true . . .

Selecting Your Wedding Music

This is a great article that was originally written by BellaB at Completely Weddings in October of 2008 and thought it was great to publish again for our blog readers with credit going to Completely Weddings for their superior writing skills….

Finding the perfect soundtrack for the first day of the rest of your lives together.

Wedding Music

Wedding Music

The music that you select for your wedding ceremony and reception will set the tone, and provide a calming, soothing, backdrop for your event.  While there may be some similarities, selecting ceremony music and selecting reception music are generally two completely separate tasks.

Ceremony Music
For the ceremony, you should first find out what the rules are for your location.  Some places allow pre-recorded music, while other more traditional churches may not have the right facilities for this.  Next, decide which parts of ceremony will need music.

You will need a piece for the processional and recessional at a minimum.  You may also want music to play while the guests are being seated, and something special just before the processional beings.  If there is a unity candle ceremony, this is another time when a short piece may be appropriate.

The most traditional choices for instrumental wedding music are a piano or organ, or a small group of classical instruments such as flute, harp, and stringed instruments.  Some couples choose to hire a vocalist to sing for the ceremony.  Whatever your choice, the ceremony music should be subdued and a bit demure. You want it to set a nice subtle backdrop for the event.  If you have a vocalist, it is important that their performance not take away from what you really want your guests to be looking at – the bride.

Reception Music
For the reception, many people elect to hire a band or DJ to handle the music.  Another option that is become more and more popular for thrifty couples is to simply use a stereo and burn a CD of the music you want, or hook up an iPod with a special playlist created for the event.  No matter what your choice, you should consider a few special songs.  You will probably want to decide on something that is very meaningful to you for the father-daughter dance, as well as the couple’s first dance.  For the other songs, you select a variety of pieces that you think your guests will enjoy dancing to.

Listen to Samples
When you have an idea of what type of music you would like, it’s time to start listening to samples.  One easy way to do this, is to go to your local library and check out several CDs.  There are many compilations that are put together especially for weddings.  You can also listen to some classical pieces that may suit your wedding. For the reception, if you don’t already have some special songs in mind, check out some of your favorite artists.

You can also listen to hundreds of popular wedding songs and music through iTunes or Windows Media Player.  Watch wedding music videos and build the perfect wedding playlist at Wedding Wire.   Below is one of my favorite love song “Because You Loved Me“  featuring from one of my favorite artists Celine Dion.  You can listen to 11 more Celine songs at the end of this video.

Live Performers
If you are booking any live performers, it is important that you listen to an audition first.  You should probably audition at least three different performers or groups.  This way you will be able to better define what you like and dislike about various performers.  Not only will this help you make the best decision possible, but an awareness of the musical style you prefer can be helpful when you are explaining to your hired musicians just how you want them to perform.  Keep in mind that professional musicians should have no problem playing a piece a little slower or faster.  They can also increase or decrease the volume at certain points in the music to coincide with you entrance or other important moments.

Final Words for your Wedding Music
The last thing that you need to remember with your ceremony music is to have the recorded piece or the musicians available for the rehearsal.  Practicing the music in the ceremony location is vital to having a successful performance.  There may be surprising acoustics in your location that need to be compensated for.  Professional musicians will be prepared to do this, but this is something that needs to be taken care of ahead of time.  Be honest with everyone you have hired for your wedding music.  They will be eager to help you, but it’s important that you and your fiancé find constructive ways to describe your needs.  By working together, you can put the perfect musical backdrop behind your event.

How to Find the Right Hues for Your Wedding Colors

One of the most exciting things in planning a wedding is choosing the color theme. Most bridesmaids-l-300x219brides chose their favorite color as the accent color for their wedding. Some forgo the traditional white or off white color and, amazingly, these work just as well and even add a bit of spice to the entire ceremony. Whether you chose your favorite color as an accent or the color of your wedding gown, the colors you chose should be something pleasing to the eye or, as color experts call, “in harmony”. The colors should be complimentary, analogous or monochromatic.

ctheory_orchidComplimentary colors are any two colors which are directly opposite each other, such as red and green and red-purple and yellow-green. In the orchid illustration (right), there are several variations of yellow-green in the leaves and several variations of red-purple in the orchid. These opposing colors create harmony.

Analogous colors are colors that are next to each other on a color wheel. They are closely ctheory_leafrelated such as yellow-green, yellow, and yellow-orange. Families of analogous colors include warm colors (red, orange, yellow) and cool colors (green, blue, violet). You can build your wedding color schemes around two or three related colors using one of the three colors as the core or the predominant color.

Monochromatic colors are all one color, but different shades, tones or tints. This is the easiest color to work with. You can chose emerald green, light green and pale green, for instance.

Consider the Venue as the Backdrop

A great idea for narrowing your choice of wedding colors is to choose the venue first. From there, work on the possible color themes you can use to match or complement the surrounding colors of your venue. For example, if you’re having your wedding at a garden beside the beach, a calm shade of lime green would be great. If your venue is mostly white, maybe the shades of periwinkle or old rose and a sprinkle of purple will do some magic for you. Keep in mind to add analogous, complimentary or monochromatic colors to create harmony.

Go for Bold, Bright, and Beautiful Colors

Some weddings boldly go for Cadillac red, although other variations would choose wine red, maroon, or burgundy. For white sand beach weddings especially, aquamarine is a great color to go with the clear waters and the bright beach setting. Another great color for this kind of setting is the bulldozer orange. These are all unique and bold colors that will definitely add to the liveliness of the occasion. Remember that even if these are really bold hues, you will still be using them in their different shades giving it a more subdued effect that’s perfect for wedding occasions.

Say It with Colors

Some colors are commonly used for what they symbolize. For example, in Asia, the color for unity in marriage is pink, for happiness is red; and green means eternity. Use of symbolism with colors will also work well in weddings.

Unique Wedding Reception Centerpieces

When another vase of flowers just won’t do.

The most common centerpiece for wedding receptions is undoubtedly an arrangement of flowers.  For a unique touch, try some of these fun and creative ideas.  Not only will you save a fortune on flowers, you’ll make your wedding stand out and give your guests something to talk about.

The Art of Glass Bowls

Glass Bowl

Glass Bowl

A simple glass bowl is a commonly overlooked feature for a centerpiece.  There are different shapes and sizes that you can use as your wedding reception centerpiece.  Use a glass vase as an aquarium – fill with a fish or two  with live aquatic plants in each bowl.  Use a fish bowl and fill it with sand and seashells for a beach wedding.  Other fillers are potpourri for the wonderful scent,  Christmas ornaments for a winter wedding,  coffee beans and candles,  acorns or cinnamon sticks for an Autumn event.  The options are endless.

The Magic of Candlelight

Candle Centerpieces

Candle Centerpieces

Candles are the perfect touch for a romantic wedding.  You can use big, thick pillar candles, a collection of tea lights, or an arrangement of various shapes and sizes.  A shallow dish of water with floating candles can create a very modern look.  Round candles set in a shallow dish of pebbles or stones is another option.  Luminous mini lanterns add  mystery and height to your table decor.  However, avoid heavily scented candles or any aromas that may clash.

The Taste of Creativity

Fruit Centerpiece

Fruit Centerpiece

For a centerpiece that will be a big hit with hungry guests, choose something edible. Edible Arrangements is a company that specializes in beautiful bouquets made from fresh cut fruit. You can get a variety of fruits, including many chocolate dipped options.

You can also use a simple dish of fruit or vegetables.  Items such as squash and pumpkin are ideal for an autumn wedding. Though they won’t be eaten, they will provide a festive centerpiece. Citrus fruits will give off a delicious fragrance.

The Beauty of Shared Memories

Photo Vase

Photo Vase

If you want a centerpiece that is completely unique to you as a couple, consider creating one out of pictures of the bride and groom.  You can include baby pictures, childhood memories, or a collage of the two of you together.  Use a rotating box-shaped picture frame so that all of your guests can get a good look.

When you’re selecting the centerpieces for your reception, keep an open mind and visit several craft stores, craft fairs, and even some antique shops.  You can use virtually anything to make a centerpiece.  Look for unique candleholders, picture frames, and glass containers.  With a fun-shaped glass jar or bowl, you can create almost anything by adding beads, marbles, flower petals, glitter, candy, or anything else that will fit inside! Create a centerpiece that is uniquely you and brings out the important elements in your heritage, religion, or wedding theme

Is Elopement right for you?

Planning An Elopement

Un-traditional Wedding

“Un-traditional Wedding”

Choosing to elope is a very personal decision. Eloping means that you and your fiancé decide to get married alone with no traditional wedding ceremony or reception. It is usually done in secret. Deciding to elope is often a very spontaneous decision, and something that a couple doesn’t plan very far ahead of time. Some people also consider a destination wedding to be an elopement, but this is not a true interpretation of the term. Since a destination wedding or even a small at-home wedding still involves guests, invitations, and a reception, these are not “real” elopements in the traditional way.

The Upside of Elopement
One of the biggest pros to eloping is the money that you will save. Many couples prefer to skip the expensive ceremony and reception and opt for an elopement that may be a few hundred dollars at most. Another reason that couples chose to elope is to forgo lengthy legal requirements in their home state. Some locations require a blood test or other waiting period before the wedding, so a couple may decide to elope in another state where they can get married immediately (think Las Vegas). Many couples who elope will also take their honeymoon in the same locale where they got married. Instead of spending their money on a big ceremony, they may opt to spend it on their dream vacation together.

The Downside of Elopement
If you elope on the spur of the moment, the biggest problem you will probably run into will be the reactions of family and friends. Close family may be especially insulted that they were not there at your wedding. If this is your first marriage, you should take time to consider if you really want to give up the once in a lifetime chance for a wedding. If you are simply looking to avoid a big event, consider opting for a small wedding instead of an elopement.

There are a few more modern options for eloping that do allow the couple to plan ahead. Many cruise lines offer private beach weddings, with only the bride and groom. These packages usually include a special suite for the bride and groom after the ceremony, champagne and strawberries in the room, photos of the event, and a special wedding certificate. The marriage is usually performed at the first stop of the cruise so that the couple can enjoy the rest of the trip as their honeymoon. Though this is technically considered an elopement, because only the bride and groom are present, this is an option that allows for a little more planning and advance notice.

However you choose to elope, you should note that wedding gifts are usually forfeit. If you elope, it is considered rude to still register for gifts. In most cases, you won’t even need to send announcements, unless you feel that your friends and relatives would like to know about your recent marriage. Word of mouth should suffice for the occasion. Some close friends and family may choose to send a card or small gift, but you shouldn’t expect the kind of windfall that many couples receive when they hold a traditional wedding.

Is Elopement Right For You?
In the end, choosing to elope is a decision that can only be made by the bride and groom. This special, private ceremony will be an intimate memory for you and your fiancé and may be just the thing for a spontaneous couple. However, it is important to consider your family, especially parents, when making this decision, and choose the type of marriage that will be the best for everyone.

Mahaffey Theater Wedding Ceremony & Reception

Tuyen and Tuan Tuyen and Tuan were married on May 2nd, 2009 at the Mahaffey Theater in Downtown St. Petersburg. The day started with a traditional Vietnamese tea ceremony in the morning, followed by a Western Ceremony in the late afternoon on the Lawn of the Mahaffey Theater. The aisle was accented with Orange Floral Pomanders with navy and orange ribbons braided for the handles. The final touch was the Orange rose petals trailing down the outer edges of the aisle. After the ceremony the guests moved indoors for the reception in the Grand Ballroom overlooking the water.
