Murphy’s Law states “if anything can go wrong, it will.”  No matter how much planning you do, unexpected “little things” can happen that could cause delays and some anxiety before, during or after your wedding day. Don’t get caught unprepared when these emergencies come.  If you want to save money, you can make your own “Wedding Day Emergency Kit” (see instructions below).  However, if you prefer saving time and want to avoid the hassle of collecting what you need for the kit, purchase a pre-made wedding emergency kit.  We looked at several vendors that offer this product and our choice is the Essentials “In the Bag” kit from With You in Mind, Inc.
Essentials Bridal Kit
This “bridal survival” kit is perfect for a small wedding party of 1-4 women. The bag itself is made of quality materials that you can reuse when all the products inside are consummed. The kits contains over seventy brand-named items for fashion, cosmetic or minor medicinal emergencies.

For the Do-it-yourself bride, here is a list of products that you may collect and pack into an organza or silk bag big enough to hold all of the products.  You can also use a good sized make-up train case to carry all your wedding day emergency products.

  • Cosmetics: For make-up touch ups, pack oil-absorbing blotting papers, lip gloss, baby powder cotton swabs and a compact mirror. For your hair, carry a comb, hair brush, bobby pins in your hair color, and hair spray to put those unruly curls in place. A clear nail polish to stop a run in pantyhose
  • Hygiene: Keep these supplies handy: dental floss, hand lotion, minipads, deodorant, tampons, maxi pads, tooth brush, toothpaste and breath mints.
  • Medications:Don’t forget your prescription drugs, Tylenol, Advil or other pain relievers for headaches, band-aids, chewable antacids, allergy pills, diarrhea or constipation medication.
  • Sundries: Miscellaneous items that you might need: hem tape, safety pins, stain remover pads, Kleenex pack, lint roller, sewing kit with thread, needle and scissor, snaps, super glue, static guard and mini snacks.

With your bridal survival kit packed, you are ready for those wedding day emergencies.

Jordan Almond Favors For Your Wedding

Sweet Wedding Favors

Sweet Wedding Favors

Jordan almonds are a long-standing wedding tradition that has been around for more than 3,000 years. In France and the Middle east, they are called dragees. In Greece they are Koufeta. Whatever name you call them, these candy-coated almonds offer the same symbolism. The almond itself is bittersweet in taste. This represents both the good and bad in marriage and life. It is no secret that any long lasting relationship surely has both bitter and sweet moments.

To emphasize the good times, and sweetness in the new marriage, these almonds are coated in sugar or candy coating. You can find these coated almonds in a variety of colors to match your wedding theme. However, the most traditional color is still white. This symbolizes purity. The actual shape of the almond is thought to symbolize love.

If you select Jordan almonds for your wedding favor, there is one more detail you should attend to. These treats are traditionally distributed to the guests in odd numbers. This represents the union of the bride and groom. By giving guests an indivisible number of almonds, your favors are demonstrating the fact that you as a new couple are also indivisible. In the Middle East, the number of almonds is even more precise. This tradition dictates that your guests each receive five, to represent five blessings – health, wealth, happiness, fertility and longevity.

Today you can present this classic wedding favor in a very decorative and modern way. The almonds can be wrapped in tulle, satin, or a small bag tied with colorful ribbons. You can order your Jordan almond favors fully assembled or your can make them yourself.  Watch the video below to see on how easy it is to make them.

Topiary Wedding Reception Decoration

No doubt, your wedding reception centerpiece adds ambiance to your special day.  You can spent several hundred dollars for the centerpieces or save money by making them yourself.  One of the floral arrangements that can be easily made by almost anyone is the Topiary.  You can experiment with an infinite number of combination or adapt them to the seasons or theme of your wedding before choosing a final design.  Another plus to making topiary is that they can be made several months in advance and all you need is to ask someone to bring them to the reception venue.   The images above are pre-made topiaries that we have included in this post to give you inspiration in designing your own topiary or, if you’d rather buy than make them, follow these links:

Top row, 1st, 2nd and 4th topiaries: “Honolulu”, “Mini Rose” and “Romance”: Unique Topiaries
Top row, 3rd topiary: “Stargazer”: Etsy,  Second row, 1st topiary: “Rose Topiary Centerpieces”: Stump Prom Second row 2nd and 3rd  topiaries: “Rose Tree” and “Champagne”: Unique Topiaries

Container and Flowers

The first step in creating your topiary is to decide what type of look you are going for.  This will help you choose the right container for your wedding centerpiece.  For traditional topiaries, the most common container is a clay pot that is spray painted or wrapped in fabric  to match your wedding colors.  For a Victorian theme, a tea cup container could be used.  One important requirement for the container is that it is sturdy enough to support the balls or flowers without tipping over.  Once you have chosen your container, decide on the type and color of flowers for your topiary. You can choose one type of flowers and/or one color as in the “Rose Topiary Centerpieces” above.

Ball-Type Topiary

For the ball-type topiaries like most of the pictures above, you will need to buy foam balls or cones,  wooden dowels, glue or a low temperature glue gun, green moss and, of course, your chosen flowers.

  • Insert a wooden dowel into the foam and then place the stick into a pot that is filled with florist clay.
  • Using a low temperature glue gun you can then stick the silk flowers onto the foam until the foam is all covered with flowers or foliage
  • Wrap the dowel in pretty ribbon that match your wedding colors or, for a natural look, leave the dowel in its original color and loosely wrap an Ivy garland around the dowel.
  • Cover the florist clay with green moss and add smaller flowers on top of the moss for additional accent.
  • Tie a ribbon around the top of your container for a finishing touch.

Real Easy Topiary for Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Brides

Here is the direction for one of the topiaries I made for a wedding reception.  For each of the topiaries, I

  • Stuck the stem of a large blue silk hydrangea flower into a painted terracotta pot filled with florist clay.
  • Covered the clay with moss and stuck small Queen Anne’s Lace flowers in the moss.
  • Tied a pretty blue ribbon around the top of the container and I am done.

The trick is the hydrangea is already round.  With a flower head that measures 8″ in diameter and stands 27″ tall, I did not need a dowel, a styrofoam ball or glue. It is that easy!  If I can do this, you can do this to.  All you need is a little inspiration and a touch of creativity.

Once you have chosen your topiary centerpiece, complete the ambiance by bringing  Topiary Photo Holder/Place Card Holder to your wedding reception tables.

Each of these miniature topiaries can hold an engagement photo of the bride and groom or a place card with the name of the guest and the table number to guide him or her to your elegantly decorated reception table.

Wedding Invitation Designs and Wordings That Wow Your Guests

One of the most taken-for-granted details in planning a wedding is the wedding invitation. Although the average cost for US weddings in 2007 is placed at $28,732 by Wedding Industry Trends in their latest Wedding Report, only a small part of that goes to the preparation of the wedding invitation.

Your wedding invitation need not be gold-studded to be that special, and it need not cost you thousands of dollars just so you can impress your guests. Wedding invitations that complement your wedding theme plus a simple invitation wording should do the trick. Here are some ideas on how to come up with great wedding invitation designs with matching invitation wordings:

Beach Theme Wedding

Beach Theme Invitation

For that breezy beach wedding theme, accentuate your wedding invitation with little pebbles, shells, glass pearls,or cutout palm leaves. Using handmade paper will add more drama. And for the wording you can put:

Begin scribbling your toast
Because Sarah and Dave
Will wed at the coast

The Beach Resort
123 Sunset Way
Redondo Beach, California

Or

The perfect shell is a gift from the sea
as beautiful and magnificent
as our love is meant to be

Please join us as we

Outdoor Wedding Theme

Outdoor Theme Invitation

For that outdoorsy theme, you can use affordable vellum paper accentuated with fossilized leaves, acorns or dried twigs and raffia fiber for bows and additional accent. Add a sweet touch by writing:

His love is the sunshine
Keeping me warm
To me, she’s the rainbow
Making me calm
His love gave me wings
Setting me free
And wherever she is
that’s where I will be.

We invite you to be with us
as we begin our new life together

Fairy Tale Wedding Theme

FairytaleTheme Invitation

And for that dream-come-true fairytale wedding theme, sprinkle your invitations with fairy dust. With purple-colored fonts set against metallic gold paper, write:

Dreaming of what is yet to be
is more fun when you’re always with me

Please join us as

Make every guest feel included

Have you ever gone to a wedding and felt like you weren’t included?wedding-guests- Not a flash-back-to-8th-grade-cliques feeling, but just a feeling that you’re not quite getting a personal connection to the couple. Maybe you don’t know them well or maybe you’ve lost touch over time, but you definitely don’t feel personally included in all the festivities.

When you make your wedding plans, you want to try to reach out and create that personal connection for all your guests, because, well, they’ll just have a better time that way. Everyone wants to feel like they know you – or got to know you better – at your wedding. Here are some ways to reach out to guests who might not be in your daily inner circle of friends.

Welcome out-of-towners. Welcome baskets/bags or packets with local restaurants, entertainment options, and in-room snacks offer convenience and make guests feel at home. Short on time? Even a simple greeting card saying, “Welcome Aunt Mabel and Uncle Oscar. FI and I are so glad you’re here and are looking forward to seeing you tomorrow” can provide that personal touch.                                                                          welcome-bucket

Tell your story. Some of your guests may have known you in grade school but lost touch, or wedding_slideshowknow you now but not when you were young. When you and your fiancé briefly tell your story and how you met, you fill in the gaps for guests and they get to know you better. You can tell your story in your program, in a short slide show or speeches at the reception.

Introduce the wedding party. Don’t just list bridesmaids, groomsmen, speakers, vocalists and program_fan_any other key people in the program. Giving a little information about how you know them, why they are special to you, even a short, quirky story gives guests insight into your life and makes them feel like they know you better.

Explain unusual traditions. Do you know that out-of-place feeling you can get when you visit an unfamiliar church? Don’t let your guests feel that way. If your ceremony incorporates traditionsceremony-programs jump_broomfrom other religions or cultures, you can explain them in the program. This helps guests follow along whether you are jumping the broom, crushing the glass or tying the knot.

A Guide To Vintage Weddings

Vintage = Romance

Think 1950s movies like Casablanca, Gone With the Wind and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. How could anyone pass up the charm, the beautiful costumes, the elegance and style of such an era?

A nice point to consider is that vintage weddings are often more eco-friendly than other themes too, as to pull off the ‘vintage’ look you’ll inadvertently be using antiques, borrowed items, hand-me-downs and vintage clothing (even a second-hand vintage wedding dress, if you’re feeling brave!). You will even be able to scour antiques shops for vintage jewelery to match your wedding colours. Op-shopping has never been more fun, and you could even find that you save quite a bit of money!

Your Dress

Think 1950s movies like Casablanca, Gone With the Wind and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. How could anyone pass up the charm, the beautiful costumes, the elegance and style of such an era? When it comes to your wedding dress, you may choose to have something entirely new created – or you may feel brave enough to reuse a vintage dress, keeping in total sync with your vintage theme. If you do decide to buy an authentic vintage gown, you’ll need to keep some things in mind:

Firstly, avoid buying these sorts of dresses online. People have generally become taller and thicker, and the clothing industry has also changed its sizing guide over the years, so unless it looks as though it would be able to be altered easily, you’re best off trying one on and buying it in the flesh than online.

Make sure you avoid stains and rips/tears. Stains that have been on a dress for twenty to eighty years are not going to come off easily, if at all. Again with tears or rips; you’d have a very hard time finding a fabric that matched in colour, texture and style which your dressmaker could use to repair such damage.

Work out your budget before you begin. Many brides know the pain and angst of having found ‘their’ dress, only to have then discovered the price tag was far out of their reach. If you do find something you love, yet cannot afford, consider taking lots of pictures (when the shopkeeper isn’t looking) and having a reproduction made. That way, you can have exactly what you want within your budget, and a bonus – it will be brand new, too!

Your Venue

Finding a venue that exudes vintage charm, yet is within your price range, may be trickier than you first thought. Such venues often charge premiums for the use of their historic rooms, with its antique furnishings and (probably very excessive) insurance rates. You’ll probably find that you can find a nice, basic venue and then use that money to decorate it exactly in your vintage style – hiring chandeliers, huge candelabras, floral displays, vintage chairs, tables and linen – which may actually work out more cheaply than that to-die-for historical ballroom you had your eye on. If you can afford and do decide to go for a historical venue, keep some things in mind – make sure you ask about their policy with candles (if it is heritage listed, they are often not allowed), their conditions in regards to damage (just in case a drunk Uncle Peter drops his glass of red wine all over their expensive vintage lounge), and anything else which you might have specifically in mind, such as potential finishing times (many venues have policies restricting noise past 10pm, for example).

A few examples below of some Reception locations that have a Vintage Look to them in the Tampa Bay Area are:

The Don Vicente Inn

The Kapok Special Event Center

The Ritz Ybor

Mirror Lake Lyceum

Belleview Biltmore Resort

The Crosley Mansion

Nova 535

Your Flowers

Some of the most popular flowers of the period include carnations, dahlias, old roses, sweet-peas and gladioli. You’ll need to be thinking pastel pinks, pearls, blues, creams, beige, buttery yellows, charcoal greys – and not just for flowers! The styles of bouquet changed through this period too, and ranged from simple nosegay bouquets right up to elaborate, overflowing creations. Keep in mind the colours of your venue, your dress, your cake etc. when deciding which flowers will best suit your vintage bouquet.

Transport

Buicks, Bentleys, Rolls Royces and convertibles! Many brides choose to use these styles of cars in their wedding days, but yours will be a true stylistic element. Transport is often one of the first indications your guests will get of your big day’s theme, as you arrive for your ceremony, and for some this means a racy sports car, or an old fashioned horse and carriage. Others may choose to go modern and hire a hummer, or even arrive in a V8 Supercar. For your vintage theme, however, you simply cannot go past the classics in order to make a statement.

Your Cake

For a vintage wedding you simply cannot go past a classic, elegant tier cake. Traditionally, this would consist of layers of boiled fruitcake for the guests, with the top tier to be kept for the bride and groom to eat on their anniversary. While many brides and grooms still kept to the tradition of saving the top layer, you no longer need to feel pressured to use any fruitcake layers! There are so many more unique and yummy flavours out there – how about Hazelnut Mocha, or Orange Buttercream? You may even choose to flavour your cake with liqueur – your guests would go wild over a layer of Caramel Baileys flavour! Of course, keeping in touch with your vintage theme, decorating the outside of the cake should include the use of satin ribbons, diamantes or pearl sequins, brooches, flower decorations and of course, icing which reflects your colour themes. Try using the cakes below as a starting point of inspiration.

Having Your Prefect Vintage Wedding

There are a myriad of other points to consider when it comes to your vintage wedding – which hairstyle will you pick? How will you dress your bridal party? What sorts of favours should you pick – and oh, what music should you pick to keep in with your theme? How on earth will you dress your GROOM? If you’re struggling to find inspiration on the web it’s a good idea to seek the help of a experienced wedding planner to guide you thru the process and save time and effort for the fun parts of the wedding planning process that you will enjoy researching.
