Choosing Wedding Cake Toppers

Traditionally, wedding cake toppers were just little bride and groom figurines that didn’t have much cake-topperpersonality. Some of them were made of cheap plastic which just didn’t look very good on the tops of gorgeously decorated wedding cakes. The good news is that you can now buy wedding cake toppers in hundreds of styles, particularly if you shop around on the Internet.

The right wedding cake topper needs to match your theme.

ceramic-cake-topperFor example, if you are having a traditional wedding, you’ll want to pick a cake topper that is also very traditional, although you might want to avoid plastic figurines and opt for nicer ceramic ones.

You could also opt for something sophisticated.monogram-cake-topper You can purchase letters made of Swarovski crystals. cake_topper_ with_namesThey can be used as monograms or to spell out a word, such as “Love” on the top of the cake. However, these toppers can be pricey at around $100 per character.

Less formal weddings can have more wedding topper choices. Since a common wedding theme can be flowerrhinestone-cake-topperdifferent types of flowers, you can choose to create wedding toppers that are real or silk flowers flower-cake-toppermatching your theme. Lovely silk roses or tulips can look beautiful on an intricately decorated cake, particularly one decorated with sugar flowers. One advantage of choosing silk flowers over real ones is that you’ll be able to keep your wedding topper as a keepsake.

If you’re having a very fairytale-style wedding, then you can top your wedding cake with any number cinderella-cake-topperof appropriate toppers, including castles, horse drawn carriages, or unicorns. On the dragon-cake-topperother hand, if you’re having a more gothic-themed wedding, you can find cake toppers that look like crows, scary houses, gravestones, vampire couples, coffins, and bats. These dark-colored toppers can look amazing on a cake covered in dark red icing with black icing for the trimming.

Some couples prefer that their cake topper be more of a reflection of their personality than their wedding theme so they might want a more whimsical topper. For example, you can find a topper with humourus-cake-toppera groom trying to escape from his bride. While not all couples will find such a topper funny, this might be a good choice for brides and grooms who can find humor even in the stress of their wedding planning.

cake-topper-1Another option is a truly personalized cake topper. Today, you can have photographs of yourselves placed on hearts or other designs which are then used to top your wedding cake. Not only is your topper completely unique to your wedding but it will make a priceless keepsake of your special day. For the photographs, you might choose your engagement photo or another special picture of the two of you taken specifically for the topper.

Other cake toppers don’t really match any theme but are meant to be a reflection of your relationship. Two white doves or two joined crystal hearts are some examples. You could also have a simple topper such as wedding bells or joined wedding rings.

No matter what type of wedding cake topper you select, make sure that it will look appropriate with the style and color of your actual cake. It’s a good idea to bring along a photograph of the cake you have selected as well as the dimensions of the top tier so you can make a wise cake topper selection.

Grand Plaza Resort Wedding & Reception

Susan and Chris were married on March 29th, 2009 on St. Petersburg Beach at the Grand Plaza Resort. Susan and Chris had chosen a shade of green and orange for their tropical beach wedding and reception. For the beach ceremony they chose to have clusters of seashells and tulle for decor on the chairs down the aisle and a tropical arrangement to be placed on the top of the arch that was provided by their Florist- Casey from Alma Ingram Flowers. Due to the large gusts of wind leading up to the ceremony, the tulle and seashells were decorated on the palm trees lining the aisle instead of the chairs. Josh from Island Boys played the Steel drums for the Ceremony.  After the ceremony, the guests were escorted to the Cocktail hour on the deck outside the Imperial Ballroom. After Cocktails and Photos by Gracia Bennish from Gracia Creative Photography , the guests collected their Sand Dollar place cards and took their seats which had chair covers and celadon sashes supplied by Coast to Coast Event Rentals. The sashes were then accented with Starfish and raffia supplied by us for an added wow. After the First Dance and Blessing, the guests were treated to a fabulous dinner buffet by the Grand Plaza Resort.  After the toast  and cake cutting( fabulous cake by Cakes by Carolynn), Jeff Staples rocked the house and kept every body dancing until the end of the night!  Below is the non-professional pictures of the set-up of the Imperial Ballroom. Looking forward to the pictures from Gracia to share also! Thanks again to all of the vendors for making Susan and Chris’s day so Special !

Sand Ceremony Tips

5 Tips for a Successful Sand Ceremony

                                                                                                                                                                               sandceremony
Looking for a little “something different” to incorporate into your wedding
ceremony?. The sand ceremony might be just the thing. It’s a practical
choice for outdoor weddings but couples in all sorts of venues are choosing
it for its message of unity. Of course, it also makes for a beautiful
presentation.

Speaking of presentation, here are five tips to help you plan for a
memorable and picture-perfect sand ceremony.

Plan a Smart Set Up

It’s nice when guests can have a good view of the sand ceremony unfolding
instead of a good look at your backside. One option is to set up the vessels
on a small table so that the officiant can stand in the middle facing the
guests, and you and your partner can stand facing each other with the table
in between. Another option is for the two of you to stand on the same side
of a table facing the guests, with the officiant to one side.

Set the Scene

A bare, boring table with a vase of sand tends to look like an afterthought
and it doesn’t make for a very pretty picture. Try to get a table that’s on
the small side so that the vessel isn’t visually lost. If you can find a
pretty decorative table or stand, great. If not, make sure you have a nice
tablecloth and consider adding a pretty table runner or tapestry to dress it
up. You may also think about scattering rose petals or seashells to add more
visual appeal.

Keep it Smooth                                                                                                                       unitysandceremony

On especially humid days your sand could be holding some moisture causing it
to clump together which makes it rather difficult to pour elegantly. Keep
your sand well sealed and dry until you’re ready to use it, and make sure
the person setting up your ceremony checks the texture and gets rid of any
lumps.

Minimize Mess

When it’s time for both of you to pour sand at the same time you may want to
have your officiant slip a funnel into the top of the central vessel. You
won’t have to worry about making a mess, and all of the sand will land where
it’s supposed to. The funnel can simply be a pretty piece of paper that
you’ve rolled and taped or tied into a cone shape.

Practice

Make sure you and your officiant discuss the specifics of the sand ceremony
during your rehearsal. Who pours when? How fast should you pour? When does
the officiant speak? Getting yourself comfortable with the timing will allow
you to concentrate on the meaning instead of worrying about “getting it
right”.

Flower Girl Alternatives

More and more churches, synagogues, and ceremony sites are restricting the dropping of fresh flower petals along the aisle because the flowers may stain the carpet or floor. Choose from this list of alternatives for creative options to the flower petal tradition.

Petal Alternatives

Floral Orb

Cover a plastic-foam ball with silk flowers and hang it from a looped ribbon so the flower girl can carry it as she walks down the aisle. Or, have a florist create a ball of fresh flowers.      flower-orb

Ribboned Wand

Instead of a basket, have the flower girl carry a wand embellished with fresh or silk flowers, a poof of tulle, and long, trailing ribbons

Fabric Buckets

Fabric-covered tin buckets make lovely (and sturdy) carrying baskets for a flower girl. Fill with a bouquet if flower petals cannot be dropped.

Fabric Purse

Your flower girl will be delighted to carry a special fabric purse filled with rose petals. Be sure to determine if your wedding venue allows dropping the petals; or, just fill the bag with silk petals or a small bouquet.

Small Bouquet

Let the flower girl carry a small nosegay that mimics the bride’s bouquet.

Country Bouquet Holder

A ribbon handle added to this bouquet holder would make it an appropriate accessory for a flower girl. Fill the embellished wallpaper cone with rose petals

  • Floral Crown: Instead of carrying flowers, adorn a flower girl’s hair with a crown of baby rosebuds.
  • Long-stemmed flowers: Rather than drop petals or flowerheads, have the flower girl pass out long-stemmed roses (with thorns removed) or other flowers to people seated along the aisles.
  • Basket of flowers: For a more natural look, give the flower girl a gathering basket filled with long-stemmed wildflowers, wired in so they don’t fall out.
  • Bells: According to Irish custom, ringing bells chase away evil spirits and bring peace to a quarreling couple. The flower girl can either ring a bell as she walks down the aisle, or pass out bells to people seated along the aisles.

Beautiful Boutonnieres

Boutonnieres are a very important part of the wedding flowers. You can choose something ordinary or traditional like your simple rose boutonniere, or you can have a little fun and make a statement starting with the Boutonnieres that they guys will wear with their wedding day attire. If your budget is a concern, then do a simple boutonniere for the groomsmen and dads and give your Special Guy that Special Touch!!!

We have included some different boutonnieres below for you to view and enjoy adding that special touch to any of the ones below!!

Sand Key Park Beach Wedding

Matt and Karen were married in April of 2008 at Sand Key Park in Clearwater with their reception following at the Clearwater Sailing Center across the street from the park. Matt and Karen had chosen Hawaii for their Honeymoon Destination and wanted the guests to have a laid back fun approach to their wedding and reception. We decided that stations for the reception with a steele drummer for the wedding and cocktail hour to get the guests in the tropical casual fun mood. The one major request that the groom had was for the reception. He wanted a pirates chest full of beer for the guys to be able to help themselves to without waiting at the bar. Fortunate for Matt. Tammy’s husband was given the task of designing a pirates chest to accommodate beer and Ice , but also look authentic. The picture is below of the finish product, which Matt is now the proud owner of .

Matt and Karen also were not big fans of champagne. We decided to come up with a signature drink called the Salemme Slam. ( similiar to a Blue Hawaiian) All of the guests were treated to a authentic coconut cup with a cute umbrella and straw and the cup was full of their signature drink for the toast. It really was a great way to keep the guests in the tropical mood and also served as a favor for the guests to keep and take home at the end of the night. We also decided to do wedding wishes instead of a traditional guest book and the guests hung all of the wishes on a manzanite tree that was placed at the entrance to the cocktail hour. We want to thank Cameron Heeg for the professional pictures below of Matt and Karen”s wedding. The food was catered by Delectable’s Fine Catering and the beautiful wedding Ceremony was performed by Dave Bishop from Loving Unity who suggested adding the shell tossing as part of the wedding ceremony.
